What is Adapted Physical Education?
Adapted Physical Education is physical education which has been adapted or modified, so that it is as appropriate for the person with a disability as it is for a person without a disability.
Federal law mandates that physical education be provided to students with disabilities and defines Physical Education as the development of:
Autism, Deaf – Blindness, Deafness, Hearing impairment, Intellectual disability, Multiple disabilities, Orthopedic impairment, Other health impairment, Serious emotional disturbance, Specific learning disability, Speech or language impairment, Traumatic brain injury, Visual impairment including blindness.
The services provided by an APE teacher include (adapted from Sherrill, 1998):

- physical and motor skills
- fundamental motor skills and patterns (throwing, catching, walking, running, etc)
- skills in aquatics, dance, and individual and group games and sports (including intramural and lifetime sports)

- Assessment of Individuals /Ecosystems
- Prescription/Placement: The IEP
- Teaching/Counseling/Coaching
- Evaluation of Services
- Coordination of Resources and Consulting

MEET THE APE Staff
Andrew is a 1997 graduate of Winfield High School and obtained his Bachelors Degree in Physical Education and his Masters in Special Education from Southwestern College. He worked as an IRC teacher at Winfield High School for 18 years before taking over as the CCSSC Adapted Physical Education teacher in 2019. He has coached football, wrestling, track, and baseball for Winfield High School and has taught Adapted Physical Education classes for Southwestern College.

Lorie has worked in Special Education since 1985. Her past employment opportunities include working at Serendipity and the Winfield State Hospital (1985-1996). In 1997, she began working for the Cowley County Special Service Cooperative and has been enjoying her time here since.
